February 19, 2014

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash where the victim was apparently fleeing the scene of a hit and run crash in the Sterling area.

Around 6:15PM deputies responded to the area of Cascades Parkway and Potomac View Road for a report of a property damage crash.

The crash involved a Honda Civic and a Pontiac Grand Prix.

Deputies found the Honda unoccupied and observed two sets of footprints leaving the scene. A search for the occupants of the vehicle was conducted with the assistance of a Loudoun County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit. The search concluded in the area of Route 7 where a pedestrian, believed to be the passenger in the Honda Civic, was struck and lost his life at the scene. According to witnesses, the victim had been in the company of another male who was trying to cross Route 7 and fled the scene without stopping. He has not been located at this time.

The pedestrian was struck around 6:27PM in the area of Route 7 and Campus Drive. The victim, whose identity has not been confirmed at this time, was attempting to cross Route 7 from south-to-north when he was struck in the center-lane of westbound Route 7 by a 2005 Honda Pilot driven by a 41-year-old Ashburn man. Multiple witnesses indicated that the driver was proceeding on a green traffic signal at the time. The Ashburn man was not injured in the crash.

As of this time, investigators believe that the victim was a passenger in a hit and run crash that occurred on Potomac View Road. The victim's identity has not been released pending confirmation of his identity and notification of next of kin.

The owner of the Honda Civic involved in the hit and run crash was located and determined not to have been involved in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation and the search continues for the driver of the Honda Civic.
