Happy Labor Day 2009

Loudoun County government offices will be closed Labor Day, Monday, September 7.

A big thank you to the Loudoun County Schools who will not use class time to hear President Barack Obama this Tuesday. They will stick to their regular academic program.

I was at Sterling Elementary School this past week and this Thursday I will be at Sully Elementary School for their back to school night to greet parents. This is a time to encourage teachers, administrators, PARENTS and their children.

Overall, crime is down in Sterling but it takes you and me working to keep it that way. Many of you have done your job by joining a neighborhood watch making Sterling the best organized in the county. And you turn out for every training and community meeting. Thank you. And I will continue to do my best too.

I do report law breaking. I observe, confront, or report suspicious activity regularly. And then theres the following.

Several abandoned cars have been picked up by the county. 27 cars have been ticketed by Project Fairness reported by me. Last week: I reported 3 addresses with commerical vehicles, 2 houses that a possibly overcrowded, 6 houses that have inoperable vehicles on their property. (this is different from abandoned cars).

Throughout the year, I report over 200 incidents similar to this and other quality of life issues.

I continue vigilance on the so-called "crash pads" which house 30 people in one house. Crash pad advocates are seeking Loudoun to abolish their zoning ordinance.

????$1.45 TAX RATE AND $154M GAP

Regarding published accounts of the board of supervisors considering a $1.45 tax rate to close a $156,000,000 funding gap for current planned spending in next years budget. As reported in several newspapers, I spoke in favor of cuts in spending and increases in fees like the tax forgiveness for new hybrid cars and a lack of late fees at the libraries. which I proposed earlier this year and got 2 votes for.

I went to Leesburg Wednesday morning for the Finance Committee "Action" item with the words " Direction to Staff " on the agenda. There is no secret that we are in bad economic times and the state has announced its own $1.3 billion shortfall in revenue.

The chairman, Jim Burton, announced he would not "allow" any action or direction which was contrary to the posted agenda. He said he would wait 30 days, next month for direction to the staff so that the board members can "get ready". I appealed to the board and members of the Finance committee that we could not wait and that as I predicted earlier this year they would have to make cuts and increase revenues across the board.

"If you had done the $80 million in reductions and abolition of tax exemptions (hybrid cars, lear jets, Howard Hughes) as I proposed earlier during the current budget, we would be in a better position now. To wait further is going to put us further in the hole", I said.

Mr. Burton and I had a back and forth at the dais and I grant him the respect he deserves as Chairman of the Finance Committee. No supervisor was in agreement with me, but I had to find that out on the record. I make no apology for being pushy.

One supervisor apparently really resented me bringing up budget cuts and abolishing tax exemptions (hybrid cars, lear jets, Howard Hughes), Stevens Miller, responded by motioning to adjourn the committee discussion I had initiated.

The chair decided to adjourn the committee. So for those of you interested in what the board plans on doing to address the topic of a staff report showing a $1.45 tax rate to fund a $156 million shortfall you have your answer. Nothing for 30 days.

I get many requests to do something about some of the foreclosed houses. This is what the county is doing now.

The county is using existing programs to address the housing crisis which is very specific. The housing crisis was caused by banks and federal policies. So banks and federal policies are okay to correct the problem. And Sterling has the most foreclosed houses-- thanks to a pro-illegal alien policy at the federal and Board of Supervisors level.

Earlier this year I worked to use federal funds to rehabilitate the area roughly south of the Sterling Safeway along Sterling Blvd. and Maple Avenue (east of Sterling Blvd. in the apartment area).

I estimate half of the 3.6 million dollars is in Sterling.

Loudoun County has designated three neighborhoods for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Loudoun County will be purchasing foreclosed properties in these neighborhoods to rehabilitate the property and sell to low, moderate or middle income homebuyers.

Two of the 3 designated neighborhoods are in Sterling Park which has the highest concentration of foreclosed houses.

Loudoun County received a $2 million award on March 27, 2009 and matched those funds with $1.6 million to offer a comprehensive approach to stabilize neighborhoods.

Northern Virginia Community College has opened their new Potomac View Road entrance, FINALLY, by Kohls and Route 7 area and that helps free up some traffic coming onto route 7 for you and me. They still do control that traffic light during rush hour and when classes let out, we all must wait until their first departures leave at night (students know the schedule better than I do of course).

Sterling Remembers 9/11 and gives back to Sterling Fire and Rescue

500 people will attend the upcoming "Sterling 9-11 We Remember" event on Friday evening 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. September 11, 2009 in the Sugarland Crossing Shopping Center and its next door neighbor, the Clocktower on Seven Shopping Center (950 Community Plaza Sterling, Va. 20164).
